Every business needs integrated door mats, whether they consist of a relatively basic non-slip entrance mat or a branded integrated solution that starts any visit to your place of business on the right foot.
However, whilst most companies are focused on getting the best mat for their budget to minimise their maintenance bills and reduce the amount of dirt traipsed throughout their facilities, another incredibly important question is what makes a door mat so effective.
The answer is remarkably simple in principle but complex in practice, and leaves a lot of scope for a range of various bespoke solutions perfect for different types of commercial buildings.
Why Are Door Mats Made From Coarse Fibres?
The core principle of door mats is remarkably simple; they are a secure, abrasive surface to wipe dirt, moisture and debris off of shoes in a controlled way without looking overly messy.
This means that materials such as coir, nylon, rubber or wire wool are essential components for scraping the outside off of your shoes and literally leaving it at the door.
The better the material, the less effort is required from guests to actively scrape their soles against the material.
Why Are Door Mats Designed To Absorb Moisture?
Most entrance mats are designed to absorb moisture whilst being resistant to damp, mould and mildew, something that is especially important during the winter when the weather can be so changeable.
Part of this is the result of effective use of materials, whilst other elements of this come down to clever designs which ensure that moisture is not allowed to pool on the surface.
This is why so many integrated mat solutions use a grate system that is integrated into the floor, as this provides more surface area and depth to absorb moisture than a traditional mat you lay on the floor.
Why Are Door Mats Made From Multiple Layers?
Integrated mats and some other types of specialised entrance mats are made not just from a single abrasive material but from multiple layers.
Part of this is to increase the effectiveness of dirt removal and the permeability of the mat for the purposes of removing moisture, but it is also used to trap dirt more easily in order to stop it from being transferred to internal carpets, particularly in receptions which need to be kept clean.
How Can You Keep Door Mats Clean?
- Use a wet-dry vacuum to dislodge and remove mud and debris. Removable mats can also benefit from being lifted and shaken off outside, but integrated mats cannot be cleaned this way.
- Use a carpet shampoo or a dilute mix of one part detergent to four parts water. This helps to keep the mat clean and smelling excellent.
- Be sure to clean your entrance mat at least weekly, depending on traffic. During winter, you may need to intensify your cleaning schedule. Keeping an eye on the weather will stop you from being surprised.
- Replace your mat if it looks worn out, frayed, loose or has tears. Get in touch with a mat expert if you have any concerns about the health of your mats.
